Hiram Gregory Berry (born August 27, 1824 – died May 3, 1863) was an important American politician and a brave general during the American Civil War. He played a key role in the Union Army, which fought to keep the United States together.

Early Life and Community Service

Hiram G. Berry was born in Rockland, Maine. In his early life, he worked as a carpenter and also as a navigator, guiding ships.

Berry was very involved in his community. He served many times in the State Legislature, which is like the state's law-making body. Later, he became the mayor of Rockland. He also started and led a volunteer group called the "Rockland Guard." This group was known for its excellent training and discipline.

Joining the Civil War

When the Civil War began in 1861, Hiram Berry quickly offered his help. He went to Augusta, Maine, and told the Governor he wanted to serve. He was given orders to gather and train a new regiment of soldiers.

First Major Battle

Berry and his troops took part in the First Battle of Bull Run, also known as the First Battle of Manassas. This was one of the first big battles of the war. He fought bravely under the command of General O.O. Howard. Because of his courage and good service at Bull Run, he was promoted to brigadier general in March 1862.

Leading His Brigade

After his promotion, General Berry was given command of the 3rd Brigade. This group included four different regiments of soldiers. His brigade fought in important battles like the Battle of Williamsburg. His quick and smart actions at Williamsburg greatly helped General Hooker, another Union commander.

Berry's brigade also fought in the Battle of Seven Pines. His leadership continued to impress, and he was promoted again to Major General on November 29, 1862.

Commanding a Division

Later, General Berry was placed in charge of the 2nd Division of the III Corps. This was a very important role, as he was now leading a large group of soldiers. He took over this command from Major General Daniel Sickles.

His Final Battle

Hiram Gregory Berry was killed in action on May 3, 1863. He was hit by a sharpshooter's bullet during the fierce Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. He died at 7:26 AM, serving his country.
