Hokendauqua was started in 1854. A very important person in its early days was David Thomas. He owned a company called the Thomas Iron Company.

David Thomas made Hokendauqua the main place for his company. He and his family built two large iron furnaces there. They also helped plan the town. It had a church and a store for the company workers. Hokendauqua was known as a "company town" because the company owned many of the homes and businesses.

East of Hokendauqua, across the Lehigh River, is North Catasauqua. A bridge connects these two communities. Pennsylvania Route 145 runs along the western edge of Hokendauqua. This highway goes south about 4 miles to Allentown. It goes north about 11 miles to Walnutport.
