History of Holland
Early Beginnings in Kansas
For thousands of years, called many millennia, the vast Great Plains of North America were home to nomadic Native American tribes. These groups moved around, often following animal herds like bison.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Kingdom of France claimed a huge amount of land in North America. This included the area that would one day become Kansas.
In 1762, after a big war called the French and Indian War, France secretly gave control of its North American lands, known as New France, to Spain. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
Becoming Part of the United States
In 1802, Spain returned most of this land back to France. But just one year later, in 1803, the United States bought a massive amount of land from France. This deal was called the Louisiana Purchase.
It included most of the land that makes up modern-day Kansas. The United States paid about 2.83 cents for each acre of land. This was a huge expansion for the young country.
In 1854, the Kansas Territory was officially set up. This was a step toward becoming a state. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state.
Founding of Holland
In 1857, Dickinson County was created within the Kansas Territory. This county included the land where Holland is located today.
The community of Holland itself was founded in 1872. That same year, a post office opened in Holland, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. The post office closed for a short time in 1875, then reopened in 1884. It finally closed for good in 1906.

Students in Holland attend schools that are part of the Chapman USD 473 public school district.
