History of Holley Village

How Holley Got Its Name

The village of Holley became an official village in 1850. It was first called Saltport. The name was later changed to honor Myron Holley. He was an important person who helped with the Erie Canal.

The Diaz Chemical Incident

In 2002, a big chemical spill happened at the Diaz chemical plant in Holley. A pipe from a chemical container broke. This caused a lot of chemicals to spread. About 31,000 tons of concrete and metal were affected. Many houses also became contaminated. Because of this, many people had to leave their homes for a while. There was a big cleanup effort to make the area safe again.

The Squirrel Slam Event

From 2006 to 2016, Holley hosted an event called the "Hazzard County Squirrel Slam." This was a squirrel hunt that helped raise money for the village's fire department. For the first six years, the event happened without any problems.

However, in 2013, groups of people started to protest the event. These groups included wildlife rescuers, animal rights supporters, and people who wanted stricter gun laws. About 30 people protested outside the Holley Fire Department. Protests continued in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Several lawsuits were filed to try and stop the event, but none of them were successful. Because of all the arguments and protests, the "Squirrel Slam" has not taken place since 2016.

School Taxes and Old High School

Residents in the Holley School district pay some of the highest school taxes in the county. The older high school building, which was in the center of town, closed in 1976. The old high school building is now considered a historical landmark.
