Hollis was first counted in the U.S. Census in 1960. Back then, it was listed as an unincorporated community. It wasn't counted again until 1990. At that time, it was officially named a "census-designated place" (CDP).

In the year 2000, there were 139 people living in Hollis. These people made up 55 households, and 38 of those were families. The population was not very dense, with about 2.2 people per square mile.

Most people in Hollis were White (about 89.93%). Some were Native American (5.04%) or Asian (0.72%). About 4.32% of the people were from two or more racial backgrounds. A small number (2.16%) were Hispanic or Latino.

Getting Around: Transportation in Hollis

Hollis has been an important place for travel to and from Prince of Wales Island. It connects the island to Ketchikan, which is a bigger regional center. There is a car rental company in Hollis called Hollis Adventure Rentals.

Ferry Services

Hollis used to be the only community on Prince of Wales Island with ferry service from the Alaska Marine Highway. However, in 2002, the Alaska Marine Highway stopped its service to Hollis. A new ferry system, the Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA), took over.

Now, Hollis is the home port for the IFA's first ship, the M/V Prince of Wales. This ship travels daily between Hollis and Ketchikan. This means people from all communities on Prince of Wales Island can reach Ketchikan using the island's road network and the ferry from Hollis.

Shuttles and Taxis

Several shuttle bus, taxi, and trucking companies offer regular services. They travel from the Hollis and Coffman Cove, Alaska ferry terminals to other communities on Prince of Wales Island.
