A main road, M-120, goes through the township. This road connects Holton to Muskegon in the southwest and Fremont in the northeast.
The township covers a total area of 35.7 square miles (92.5 square kilometers). Most of this area, 35.0 square miles (90.6 square kilometers), is land. The rest, 0.7 square miles (1.8 square kilometers), is water, like lakes and rivers.
The southern part of the township has a stream called Cedar Creek. This creek flows southwest and joins the Muskegon River. In the northern part, Skeel Creek flows northwest and is part of the White River system.
Communities in Holton Township
Holton Township has a couple of smaller communities within it:
Holton
Holton is a small community that isn't officially a city or town. It's located about 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Muskegon and 18 miles (29 km) east of Lake Michigan.
Holton was first planned out in 1871. It was named after Henry H. Holt, who was an important person from Muskegon County. He even donated a bell to the local Methodist church. A post office opened in Holton in 1872. The ZIP code for Holton, 49425, is used by most of the township and some nearby areas.
Brunswick
Brunswick is another small community in the township. It's located on the M-120 highway, right on the eastern border of the township.
It started around 1875. This was where the stagecoach road met the Pere Marquette Railway line, which connected Muskegon and White Cloud. People and mail would travel north from here to Hesperia.
The settlement was first called "County Line," then "Marionville." The post office, which opened in 1881, was called "Dash" before being renamed Brunswick in 1897. There used to be a feed store and a small post office here, but they are now closed. The community is served by the Holton post office. St. Michaels Catholic Church and its cemetery are located in Brunswick. Even though the CSX train tracks still run through the area, the old train station is closed.
