The Home Building Association Bank is a very old and important building in Newark, Ohio. A famous architect named Louis Sullivan designed it. He was from Chicago and was known for his unique style. This bank is one of only eight banks that Sullivan designed.

In 1973, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special place that is protected because of its history.

This building has had many different owners over the years. It started as a bank, but it has also been a butcher shop, a jewelry store, and even an ice cream shop! Each time, the inside of the building was changed to fit the new business.

Louis Sullivan had a small piece of land to build on. So, he made the bank two stories high to make it bigger. This was unusual for his bank designs. He also chose different colors for this building. Instead of his usual red-brown bricks, he used gray-green tiles called terra cotta. These tiles had special designs on their edges, which was typical for Sullivan's work.

You can also see winged lions on the building. These are like the ones he put on other banks he designed in Iowa and Ohio. No one is quite sure why he used these creatures so often. Another special thing is that Sullivan's name is written in a tile mosaic above the front door.

History of the Bank Building

The Home Building Association Bank was built in 1914. It officially opened on August 25, 1915. At first, it was known as "The Old Home." This bank was one of three banks that Louis Sullivan designed in 1914. The other two were in Grinnell, Iowa, and West Lafayette, Indiana.

In 1942, the bank building was sold to William Camlin. From 1943 to 1946, a business called Sanitary Meat Market used the building. Then, from 1946 to 1973, Symon's Best Jewelry Company was located there.

The building became part of the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 1973. This helped protect its unique design and history.

Later, from 1979 to 1983, a company called Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association used the building. The last business to be in the building was Tiffany's Ice Cream Parlor. It was there from 1984 to 2007.

In December 2013, the building was given to the Licking County Foundation. This group plans to fix up the building and make it look new again. Once the repairs are finished, Explore Licking County will move into the space. This group helps people visit the county.

Work on the basement was finished in October 2016. The outside of the building started to be restored in 2018.
