Homer is a charming village located in Cortland County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,210 people lived here. The village gets its name from the larger surrounding area, which was named after the famous ancient Greek poet, Homer.
Most of Homer village is within the town of Homer. A small part on the south side is in the town of Cortlandville. Homer is situated just north of the city of Cortland.
A Look at Homer's History
Homer is part of an area once known as the Central New York Military Tract. This land was set aside for soldiers after the American Revolutionary War. A clerk gave the name "Homer" to this particular township.
The community of Homer was started in 1791. It was founded by Amos Todd, his sister Rhoda Beebe, and her husband Joseph Beebe. The village officially became a village in 1835.
Homer was the inspiration for "Homeville," a small town in the famous novel David Harum. This book was written by Edward Noyes Westcott.
Some important places in Homer are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Old Homer Village Historic District, the United States Post Office, and the unique Water, Wall, and Pine Streets Lenticular Truss Bridges.
Exploring Homer's Geography
Homer village is located at the southern edge of the town of Homer. Its exact coordinates are 42°38′27″N 76°10′55.22″W / 42.64083°N 76.1820056°W.
The United States Census Bureau says the village covers about 1.94 square miles (5.0 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.
Several important roads meet in Homer. These include New York State Route 41 and New York State Route 90. They connect with the north-south highways New York State Route 281 and U.S. Route 11. Interstate 81 is just east of the village. You can get to Homer from Exit 12 on I-81.
The city of Cortland is only about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Homer. The village of Tully is about 11 miles (18 km) to the north.
The West Branch of the Tioughnioga River flows south past the east side of the village. This river is part of the larger Susquehanna River system.
