A Look Back at Homestown's History
Homestown was first called South Wardell. It was one of ten communities built by the Farm Security Administration. This government group helped farmers who had lost their homes and jobs. These farmers were called sharecroppers or tenant farmers. They worked on land owned by others and paid with a share of their crops or money.
The communities were built after a large protest in January 1939. Homestown was the biggest of these new communities. It was specifically built for African-American families.
The Delmo Community Center in Homestown is an important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This means it is recognized as a place important to the history of the United States.
