History of Hometown
Hometown was developed after World War II by Joseph E. Merrion. He built affordable duplex houses for soldiers returning from the war and their families. The community officially became a city in 1953. Its population grew quickly, reaching over 7,000 people by 1958.
The 1967 Tornado Event
On April 21, 1967, a very strong tornado hit Hometown. This powerful storm caused a lot of damage. It destroyed 86 homes and damaged about 500 others. The community worked hard to rebuild after this event.
