Horatio Nelson Davis (born June 17, 1812 – died February 15, 1907) was an important American figure. He was a banker and a politician from the Republican Party. He was also an early settler in Wisconsin.
Davis served as the mayor of Beloit, Wisconsin, two times. He was the 13th and 15th mayor of the city. He also represented Rock County in the Wisconsin State Senate for four years. His son, Cushman Kellogg Davis, became a famous politician too. He served as a U.S. senator and a governor for the state of Minnesota.
Early Life and Military Service
Horatio N. Davis was born in Henderson, New York. When the American Civil War started, he joined the Union Army. He became a captain in the department that handled food and supplies for the soldiers. This department was called the commissary and subsistence department.
After the war ended, he was given an honorary title. He was made a brevet major for his good service. This means he earned the rank of major as an honor, even if he didn't serve as one full-time. After his military service, Davis became the president of a bank.
A Leader in Politics
Horatio N. Davis was active in politics. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served as a state senator for the 17th District. He held this position from 1873 to 1877. A state senator helps make laws for their state.
Davis also served as the mayor of Beloit, Wisconsin. A mayor is the leader of a city. He was mayor from 1873 to 1877. He helped lead the city during these years.
Family and Later Years
Horatio N. Davis had a son named Cushman Kellogg Davis. His son followed in his footsteps and became a very successful politician. Cushman Kellogg Davis became a U.S. senator and even the Governor of Minnesota.
Horatio N. Davis lived a long life. He was able to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary in 1887. In 1890, his son visited him at the family farm. Horatio N. Davis passed away in Buffalo, New York, when he was 94 years old. He was known for keeping his mind and body strong almost until the very end of his life.
