Horseshoe Bay is a beautiful bay on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight, England. It's located near the village of Bonchurch. The bay faces south-east, looking out towards the wide English Channel. Its shoreline stretches for about 250 yards (230 m). Don't mix it up with another bay called Horseshoe Bay! That one is about 8 miles (13 km) north, closer to Culver Down.
Protecting the Coast: The Seawall
The edge of Horseshoe Bay has a strong concrete wall. This wall is called a seawall. It was built in 1988 to protect the land. It keeps a walking path safe from the ocean. It also stops the soft, chalky cliffs from wearing away. This wearing away is called erosion.
The seawall is very well-built. It has steps at the bottom, close to the water. There's also a strong concrete slope, called a berm. This helps to break the waves. Finally, a curved wall at the top pushes waves back into the sea. This design helps protect the coast.
Building this big wall used about 6,000 cubic metres (7,800 cu yd) of concrete. It cost £1.4 million to build. A popular walking route, the Isle of Wight Coastal Path, runs right along this seawall. It's a great place for a stroll!
