The Howell Living History Farm is a special place where you can experience farm life from the year 1900. It's also known as the Joseph Phillips Farm. This farm covers about 130 acres and is located near Titusville, New Jersey, in Hopewell Township.

It's like an open-air museum where you can see how people lived and worked on a farm long ago. The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 1977. This means it's an important historical site because of its old buildings and farming history. It also became part of the Pleasant Valley Historic District on June 14, 1991.

Farm History and Purpose

Early Beginnings of the Farm

The Howell Living History Farm started a very long time ago. In 1732, a blacksmith named Joseph Phillips bought 125 acres of land. This was the beginning of the farm.

Growing the Farm Through Generations

Joseph's son, Henry Phillips, made the farm even bigger. By 1800, he had added another 100 acres. Henry was a captain in the local militia during the American Revolution. When he passed away in 1805, records showed the farm had oxen, a special horse, and crops like flax growing.

Buildings and Modern Use

Most of the buildings you see on the farm today were built in the 1800s, before the American Civil War. The last private owners were the Howell family. They gave the land to Mercer County in 1974. That's when it became a museum!

Today, the museum shows what farm life was like around 1900. Mercer County owns the farm, and the Mercer County Park Commission helps run it. They get a lot of support from a group called The Friends of Howell Living History Farm.
