Mountain type Shield volcano

Howlock Mountain is a cool mountain in the Cascade Range of central Oregon. It's located right next to Mount Thielsen. What makes Howlock Mountain special is that it was once a huge shield volcano. Over a very long time, especially during the Ice Ages, powerful glaciers carved away much of the volcano. This left behind a unique shape with deep valleys and sharp peaks.

Howlock Mountain sits right on the border between Douglas County and Klamath County in Oregon. It's a great example of how nature, like ice and volcanoes, can shape our world.

What is a Shield Volcano?

A shield volcano is a type of volcano that looks like a warrior's shield lying on the ground. It has gentle slopes, not steep ones like a cone-shaped volcano.

How Shield Volcanoes Form

Shield volcanoes form from very runny lava that flows easily. This lava spreads out over a large area, building up wide, flat layers. Howlock Mountain was once an active shield volcano, but now it's mostly eroded away.

Shaped by Ice: Glaciers at Work

During the Ice Ages, huge sheets of ice called glaciers covered many parts of the Earth. These glaciers were like giant bulldozers.

How Glaciers Changed Howlock

As glaciers moved slowly down the sides of Howlock Mountain, they scraped away rock and soil. This process is called erosion.

  • Cirques: The glaciers carved out deep, bowl-shaped hollows on the mountain sides. These are called cirques. You can see many of these around Howlock Mountain.
  • Horns: Where several glaciers carved cirques around a single peak, they left behind a sharp, pointed mountain top called a horn. The summit of Howlock Mountain has several of these horns.
