Huascarán is the tallest mountain in Peru. It's also the fourth-highest mountain in all of South America. Imagine standing on top of it! The very top is 22,205 feet (6,768 meters) high. That's super tall!

This amazing mountain is found in the Ancash Region of Peru. Many people love to visit Huascarán. It has become a popular place for tourists and especially for brave mountain climbers.

Huascarán is actually what's left of an extinct volcano. This means it was once a volcano that erupted, but now it's completely quiet. Over a very long time, the mountain has been getting smaller.

The Big Event of 1970

In 1970, something very big happened. A huge natural event called the Ancash Earthquake shook the area. This earthquake caused a large part of Huascarán to break off.

This part of the mountain was made of rock and ice. When it broke off, it caused a massive slide. Sadly, this slide affected many small towns around the mountain. Almost 17,000 people lost their lives because of this natural disaster. It was a very sad day for the region.
