Hugo José O'Donnell y Duque de Estrada, born on September 29, 1948, is a Spanish nobleman, naval officer, lawyer, and historian. He holds the title of the 7th Duke of Tetuán. He is also a Grandee of Spain, which is a very high rank of Spanish nobility.

He has been a vice president of the International Commission for Maritime History. He is also a respected member of the Royal Academy of History and the Royal Historical Society.

Life and Career of Hugo O'Donnell

Hugo O'Donnell became the 7th Duke of Tetuán on October 5, 2005. He inherited this important title from his father, Leopoldo O'Donnell y Lara. The title of Duke of Tetuán was created to honor his ancestor, General Leopoldo O'Donnell. This general led the conquest of Tetuán in Morocco in the mid-1800s. He also served as Prime Minister of Spain many times.

Hugo O'Donnell is considered the head of the O'Donnell family, a famous Irish family. He is an active member of the O'Donnell of Tyrconnell Clan Association in Ireland. He is also a Knight of Malta, which is part of a very old Catholic order.

Besides his noble titles, the duke is a well-known naval historian. He used to be a naval commander in the Spanish military. He also served as a Minister for the Marine in Spain, which means he was in charge of things related to the sea and navy. On June 22, 2001, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Academy of History. He officially joined on February 1, 2004.

Hugo O'Donnell is married to María de la Asunción Armada y Díez de Rivera. They have four children together:

  • Hugo José O'Donnell y Armada, born in 1979. He is the 9th Marquess of Las Salinas.
  • Alfonso O'Donnelly Armada, born in 1984. He is the 7th Count of Lucena.
