Hunter is a small village located in Greene County, New York. In 2020, about 429 people lived there. You can find Hunter in the northwestern part of the larger town of Hunter, right along New York State Route 23A.

History of Hunter

Hunter wasn't always called Hunter! It was first known as "Edwardsville." This name came from William Edwards, who started the village by building a tannery there. A tannery is a place where animal hides are turned into leather. Hunter officially became a village in 1896.

Geography of Hunter

Hunter is found in the western part of Greene County, nestled within the beautiful Catskill Mountains. It sits in the valley of Schoharie Creek.

New York State Route 23A is like the main street of the village. If you head east on this road, you'll reach Tannersville in about 5 miles (8 km) and Catskill in about 21 miles (34 km). If you go west along Schoharie Creek, you'll get to Prattsville in about 15 miles (24 km).

The village of Hunter covers a total area of about 1.89 square miles (4.88 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1.85 square miles (4.80 square kilometers), is land, and a small part, about 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometers), is water.

Fun Things to Do in Hunter

Hunter Mountain Ski Area

Hunter Mountain is a very important spot in the area. It's the highest peak in Greene County and the second highest in the entire Catskills region.

The mountain is home to the Hunter Mountain ski area. In winter, you can go skiing and tubing there. In summer, it's great for biking, sightseeing, and hiking. This ski resort is the biggest employer in the village. It used to be run by the Slutzky family, then by Peak Resorts, and now it's managed by Vail Resorts. The mountain's activities change with the seasons, which affects how busy the town is.

Summer Camps in Hunter

Hunter village has been home to Camp Loyaltown for over 40 years. This summer camp is special because it cares for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome. Every year, more than 650 campers come to enjoy the beautiful scenery and classic summer camp fun. The camp also brings staff from all over the world, who help the village's economy each summer.

Another important camp, Camp Jened, was also located in Hunter. It was a summer camp for people with a wider range of physical and cognitive disabilities. This camp was a big part of the disability rights movement and the independent living movement in the second half of the 20th century.
