History of Huntley
Around the year 1900, a rich man from Europe, Baron Maurice de Hirsch, started a special fund. This fund helped about 50 families start new farms in the United States. They settled in the area where Huntley is now. This spot was about 8 miles (13 km) south of the North Platte River. It was also about 5 miles (8 km) west of the Nebraska border.
Most of these new families came from New York and Pennsylvania. Some also came from Europe. On July 6, 1906, six men from the group officially claimed land. Each claimed 160 acres (65 hectares) in and around what is now Huntley. Many of these early settlers lived in sod dugouts. These were simple homes built into the ground.
Life was hard for the new residents. The closest water was about half a mile away in the Katzer Canal. Getting supplies was also difficult. The nearest store was in Mitchell, Nebraska, about 15 miles (24 km) to the east. Many settlers did not own horses. They had to walk to Mitchell to buy food like flour, sugar, and beans. They carried everything back in bags on their backs.
About a year later, Baron de Hirsch's fund sent $500 to each family. This was a lot of money back then! With this help, the settlers could buy horses, wagons, farm tools, and even a milk cow. Soon, Huntley grew. It had a post office, a church, a grocery store, and a lumber yard.
In 1908, Baron de Hirsch helped more families come to Wyoming. About 40 to 45 more families settled a few miles northeast of Huntley. This area became known as the community of Allen. A school and a synagogue (a Jewish place of worship) were built there.
