Hynam is a small town and area in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located in the southeastern part of the state. This region is known as the Limestone Coast. Hynam is very close to the border with the state of Victoria. It is about 302 kilometers southeast of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is also about 11 kilometers east of the town of Naracoorte.

History of Hynam

Hynam began as a government-planned town. It was first named Hynam East. This happened on June 10, 1909. The town was built right next to the Hynam Railway Station. It was divided into two parts. One part was on the north side of the railway line. The other part was on the south side. On February 20, 1941, the town's name was officially changed to 'Hynam'. The boundaries for the larger area, or 'locality', of Hynam were set on April 12, 2001. This area includes the original town of Hynam. It also includes the northern part of another old town site called Jessie, which is no longer active.

Railway Connections

Hynam was once connected by a railway line. This line ran between Wolseley and Mount Gambier, South Australia. It was part of the Mount Gambier railway line. However, this railway line is no longer in use. It officially closed on April 12, 1995.

Government and Local Area

Hynam is part of different government areas. For federal elections, it is in the Barker division. For state elections in South Australia, it is in the MacKillop district. Locally, Hynam is managed by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council. This council helps run services for the community.
