Kybybolite is a small place in South Australia. It is located in the south-east part of the state. This area is known as the Limestone Coast. Kybybolite is very close to the border with the state of Victoria. It is about 301 kilometers (187 miles) south-east of Adelaide, the capital city. It is also about 19 kilometers (12 miles) north-east of Naracoorte.

History and Development

The government started a special farm in Kybybolite in 1905. This farm was used for research. They studied many things there. This included growing fruit and raising animals like chickens, pigs, dairy cattle, and beef cattle. They also worked with sheep and grew different types of grass for animal food. The old house on the farm, called Kybybolite house, is very important. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register because of its history.

The railway used to run through Kybybolite. But it closed on April 12, 1995. The last train passed through that afternoon.

The Kybybolite School

A school operated in Kybybolite from 1907 to 1998. During that time, 854 students learned there. The school library was named after Jim Paroissien. He was the head teacher from 1930 to 1940. Sadly, he was killed in action during World War 2 over Malta.

Land Use and Environment

Most of the land in Kybybolite, outside the small town area, is used for farming. This is called primary production. Part of the Mullinger Swamp is located within Kybybolite. This area is protected as the Mullinger Swamp Conservation Park. This helps to keep the natural environment safe.

The Kybybolite Sinkhole

On August 4, 2016, something unexpected happened. A large hole, called a sinkhole, suddenly opened up. It was about 2 meters (6.6 feet) wide and 2 meters (6.6 feet) deep. This happened on the property of a local farmer, Andrew Shepherd.

Famous People

Lachie Neale grew up in Kybybolite. He played his junior football here. Lachie Neale is a famous Australian rules footballer. He won the 2020 Brownlow Medal and the 2023 Brownlow Medal. He also won the 2024 Gary Ayres Award and was a premiership captain.
