History of Hyndman
The first known person to settle in this area was Samuel Waters. He lived near Wills Creek and built a bridge there before the year 1800.
Around 1800, Jacob Burkett and Amos Raley started a business. They built boats in a settlement called Bridgeport. These boats were used to carry grain down to Cumberland, Maryland.
In 1850, Enoch Cade opened a store in the growing community. A one-room school was opened in 1865. Samuel Miller then started planning out a town on his land north of the creek.
Railroads and Renaming
In 1871, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) came through the town. This railroad connected Cumberland to Pittsburgh. Another railroad, the Bedford and Bridgeport Railroad, was built from Mt. Dallas to Cumberland.
In September 1877, the town officially became a borough. This means it got its own local government. In December of that same year, the town was renamed Hyndman. It was named after E. K. Hyndman, who was a superintendent for the B&O Railroad. The first elected leaders included Chief Burgess S. M. Wilhelm and several council members. Early businesses in Hyndman made bricks and limestone.
Growth and Services
In 1889, the National Bank of South Pennsylvania opened in Hyndman. It later failed in 1905 but was bought by J. J. Hoblitzell. It is now known as Hoblitzell National Bank.
Over the years, Hyndman gained more important services:
- In 1892, the Hyndman Water Company was finished.
- In 1893, an electric plant opened, bringing electricity to the town.
- A telephone exchange started in 1906.
- A fire company was formed in 1927 to protect the town.
Major Events
Hyndman has faced some challenges. In late December 1949, a large fire burned down most of the town's business center. Many buildings were made of wood, which made the fire spread quickly.
In August 2017, a train derailment happened. Thirty-three train cars went off the tracks, causing fires. Most of the town's residents had to leave their homes for several days to stay safe.
