The Hypoptopoma sternoptychum is a tiny catfish from the Loricariidae family. It is sometimes called the "stargazer catfish." This fish is quite small, growing to about 3.3 centimeters (1.3 inches) long.
This little catfish lives at the bottom of rivers and streams. It prefers fresh water in warm, tropical areas. Because it stays near the bottom, scientists call it a demersal fish.
Where This Catfish Lives
The stargazer catfish is native to South America. You can find it in the upper and central parts of the Amazon River. It lives in the smaller streams and rivers that flow into the Amazon. These areas are in countries like Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
