Ibrahim Abdul Ghafour El Orabi (Arabic: إبراهيم عبد الغفور العرابي; 20 May 1931 – 18 September 2019) was an important Egyptian military leader. He was a Lieutenant General in the Egyptian Army. He also served as the 13th Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces. This made him the second-highest-ranking military officer in Egypt.
Orabi was part of the Free Officers Movement. This group played a big role in the Egyptian revolution of 1952. He held many important positions during his career. These included being the Chief of Operations of the Armed Forces and commander of the Second Field Army. He also led the 21st Armored Division and the Egyptian Armored Corps during the North Yemen Civil War.

Early Life and Family
Ibrahim El Orabi was born in Gharbia, Egypt, in 1931. His family was quite important in politics.
He was related to Ali Zaki El Orabi Pasha, who was a former Minister of Public Knowledge and Minister of Transportation and Communications. Ali Zaki El Orabi also led the Parliament of Egypt during the time of King Farouk I of Egypt. Ibrahim's brother, Nabil El Orabi, was Egypt's ambassador to Russia. He was also related to Mohamed Orabi, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt.
Education and Military Training
Orabi was very well-educated in military science. He earned a Bachelor of Military Science degree in 1950 from the Egyptian Military Academy in Cairo.
Later, he studied abroad and in Egypt. He received a Master of Science degree from the M.V. Frunze Military Academy in Moscow. He also earned another Master of Science from the College of Military Commanders and Staff. He completed his studies with a PhD in military science from Nasser Military Academy.
Personal Life
Ibrahim El Orabi was married to Leila, and they had three children: Khadija, Khaled, and Tarek. His sons, Khaled and Tarek, both served in the Egyptian General Intelligence. Tarek is still working there. Orabi and his wife were also proud grandparents to nine grandchildren.
Military Career Highlights
Orabi started his military service in 1950 in the Armored Corps. He then joined the Free Officers Movement. He took part in the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, which changed Egypt's government.
From 1963 to 1967, he led the Arab Forces in Iraq. He also commanded the Armored Corps during the North Yemen Civil War. After these roles, he worked in the Field Marshal's Office.
In 1968, he became the vice president of operations for the Second Field Army. Soon after, he was appointed commander of the 21st Armored Division.
Between 1977 and 1981, Orabi was promoted to major general. He became the assistant commander of the Second Field Army. He then served as the chief of staff for the Second Field Army. Later, he became the commander of the entire Second Field Army.
On March 4, 1981, President Anwar Sadat chose General Orabi to be the Chief of Operations of the Armed Forces. In 1982, he was appointed assistant minister of defense.
On July 16, 1983, President Hosni Mubarak nominated Orabi to be the Chief of the General Staff. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. He took over this important role from Army General Abd Rab El Naby Hafez.
In 1987, Orabi became the chairman of the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI). He stayed in this position until he retired in 1995.
