Ignjat Đurđević, also known as Ignazio Giorgi (born February 1675 – died January 21, 1737), was a famous poet and translator from Dubrovnik, a city that was once called Ragusa. He lived during the Baroque period, a time known for its grand and dramatic art and literature. Ignjat Đurđević is best known for his long poem called Uzdasi Mandaljene pokornice, which means "The Sighs of the Repentant Magdalene". He wrote his poems in three languages: Latin, Italian, and Croatian.

About Ignjat Đurđević
Ignjat Đurđević was born in Dubrovnik to Bernardo Giorgi and Teresa Zlatarić. His family was not part of the very old noble families of Dubrovnik, but they had recently become nobles.
Early Life and Education
As a member of a wealthy family, Ignjat lived a lively life when he was young. He held important positions in Dubrovnik, such as being a member of the Great Council in 1693. He was also the duke of Šipan Island in 1695 and the captain of the Lovrijenac fortress in 1696.
In 1698, he decided to join the Jesuits in Rome. There, he studied philosophy and worked as a teacher. Later, in 1706, he joined the Benedictines in Dubrovnik. However, he had to leave the city for a few years, from 1710 to 1712, and lived in Rome and Napoli.
His Poetic Works
Ignjat Đurđević was a poet who wrote in three languages: Latin, Italian, and Croatian. His poems showed deep feelings. His Croatian poems, especially his "Love Poems" (Ljuvene pjesni), are some of the most famous lyric poems from Dubrovnik. They were influenced by other poets like Ivan Bunić Vučić.
One of his poems, "Marunko's Tears" (Suze Marunkove), tells the story of Marunko from the island of Mljet. Marunko is sad because of a beautiful girl named Pavica. This poem was inspired by another work called Derviš by Stijepan Đurđević.
Major Poems Published
After many years of work, Ignjat Đurđević published his most famous poem, "The Sighs of the Repentant Magdalene" (Uzdasi Mandaljene pokornice), in Venice in 1728. Along with it, he published a collection called "Various Poems" (Pjesni razlike). "Magdalene" is often seen as his most beautiful work. The "Various Poems" cover many different topics and styles. Experts in Croatian literature have noted that these poems are similar to those written by Fran Krsto Frankopan.
In 1729, his "Slavic Psalms" (Saltijer slovinski) were also printed in Venice. This book contains his translations or paraphrases of the psalms of King David. These translations are known for their beautiful language and style.
Family Background
Ignjat Đurđević's father was Bernardo Giorgi, and his mother was Tereza Zlatarić. His mother's family, the Zlatarićs, were known to have come from Srebrenica in Bosnia. Ignjat Đurđević himself mentioned a Catholic book written in the "Serbian language" using the Cyrillic alphabet in his writings.
