Illogan (pronounced il'luggan) is a village in west Cornwall, England. It's about two miles (3 km) northwest of Redruth. In 2011, about 5,404 people lived in Illogan. The larger urban area, which includes Illogan, had around 55,400 people. This makes it the biggest group of towns and villages in Cornwall.

Illogan was once a farming area. However, it grew a lot during the mining boom. This mining success helped the entire Camborne-Redruth area become very prosperous.

Illogan's Past: A Look at History

Ancient Finds: Roman Villa

In 1931, the remains of an old Roman villa were found at Magor Farm. Experts from the Royal Institution of Cornwall helped dig up the site. This villa was likely the home of a rich person from the Dumnonian tribe. They had probably adopted the Roman way of life.

Illogan's Historic Church

Illogan parish church

The local Church of England parish church is named after St Illogan and St Edmund. The first mention of the church dates back to 1235. By 1844, the church was too small for the growing mining community.

A new church was built in 1846 for £2,875. Only the bell tower of the old church remains. This is because Trinity House needed it as a landmark for ships. The church was repaired and reopened in 2012.

The churchyard has graves for 52 soldiers from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It also holds the grave of Thomas Merritt. His carols are sung by Cornish people all over the world. He even wrote a march for Edward VII's coronation in 1902.

The church, its tower, and some other features in the churchyard are listed as Grade II historic buildings. This means they are important and protected.
