The Ilyushin Il-86 (often called Camber by NATO) is a large Soviet passenger aircraft. It was the very first wide-body airplane ever built in the USSR. A wide-body aircraft means it has two aisles in the cabin, making it much wider than regular planes.
Today, some Il-86 planes are still used by the Russian Air Force. They serve as important transport aircraft. This civilian plane also helped in the development of a special military aircraft called the Ilyushin Il-80.

History of the Il-86
Building a Soviet Wide-Body Plane
The Ilyushin Il-86 was designed and built by the Ilyushin company. This company is famous for making many types of aircraft. The Il-86 was a big step forward for Soviet aviation. It showed that the USSR could build large, modern passenger jets.
The first time an Il-86 flew was in 1976. This was a very important moment for the Soviet aircraft industry. After more testing, the plane was officially introduced in 1979. This meant it started carrying passengers on regular flights.
Production and Users
The Il-86 was produced from 1979 to 1986. During these years, 103 of these large airplanes were built. Most of them were used by Aeroflot, which was the main airline of the Soviet Union. Aeroflot used the Il-86 for many years to carry passengers on both domestic and international routes.
After the Soviet Union ended, some Il-86 planes continued to fly for other airlines. However, over time, most civilian Il-86s were retired. They were replaced by newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft.
Il-86 in Military Service
While the Il-86 was mainly a passenger plane, some versions were made for military use. These planes are used by the Russian Air Force. They serve as important transport aircraft, moving troops and supplies.
The Il-86 also played a role in creating the Ilyushin Il-80. The Il-80 is a special military aircraft. It is designed to be an airborne command center. This means it can be used by top leaders to control military operations from the sky, especially in emergencies. The Il-80 uses the strong and reliable design of the Il-86 as its base.
