The Imam Hossein Comprehensive University (also known as IHU) is a public university located in Tehran, Iran. It opened in 1986 and is connected to the IRGC (Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and other government ministries. The university is named after Imam Hossein, an important figure in Islam.

IHU offers many different study programs for both undergraduate (first degree) and postgraduate (advanced degree) students. About 6,000 students and cadets attend the university.

University History

The university was started in 1986 by IRGC Commander Seyed Mehdi Mousavi Zare. It was first called Imam Hossein Higher Education. The Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (Iran) officially recognized it as a university.

Early Faculties

When it first opened in 1987, the university had several main departments:

  • Engineering Science
  • Natural Science
  • Social Science
  • Medicine

Later, in 1990, a new department for military science was added. In 1994, the medical department became its own separate university, called the Baqiyatallah Medical Sciences University. This new university focuses on training medical students and doing research in military medicine.

Why the University Was Needed

After the Iran Revolution in 1979, Iran needed to become more self-sufficient in its military industries. Many foreign experts had left, making it hard to produce military equipment. To solve this, the government created the Defense Industries Organization (DIO) in 1981.

By 1986, Iran was making many of its own weapons. However, they still needed skilled specialists and technicians. To train these experts, several universities and colleges were opened or linked to the DIO. Imam Hossein University was one of these important institutions.
