Imanpa is a small community located in the middle of Australia. It is in the Northern Territory, which is a large part of Australia. Before April 4, 2007, this place was known as the Mount Ebenezer homestead. Its name was changed to Imanpa, taking the name from the local area.
Where is Imanpa?
Imanpa is in a very central part of Australia. It is about 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Uluru, which is also known as Ayers Rock. Uluru is a famous big red rock. Imanpa is also about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southwest of Alice Springs, a larger town. The community is only about 7 kilometers (4 miles) north of the Lasseter Highway. This highway is the main road that connects Uluru to the Stuart Highway.
Community Facilities
Imanpa has some important facilities for its residents. About 17 kilometers (11 miles) from Imanpa is the Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse. A roadhouse is like a rest stop with fuel, food, and sometimes a place to stay. This roadhouse is owned and run by the Imanpa community itself. They also own and run the Angas Downs Indigenous Protected Area. Imanpa also has its own police station to help keep the community safe.
Who Lives in Imanpa?
Every few years, Australia counts how many people live in different places. This is called a census. The latest count was in 2021. At that time, 124 people lived in Imanpa.
Native Title Rights
In April 2023, something very important happened for the Anangu people connected to Imanpa. The Federal Court of Australia made a special decision about their land rights. Seven years before, the Anangu people had asked for their traditional land rights to be recognized. This is called a native title application.
The court decided that the Anangu people have native title over about 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles) of land. This land includes places like Erldunda, Lyndavale, and Curtin Springs stations. A "station" is a large farm or ranch. This decision was announced in Imanpa by Justice Mordy Bromberg. It was the first time that commercial rights for native title were recognized in Central Australia. This means the Anangu people have special rights to use their land for business and cultural purposes.
