Indus is a small community in southern Alberta, Canada. It is called a hamlet, which is a very small settlement. Indus is part of Rocky View County.

You can find Indus about 6 kilometers (3.8 miles) east of Calgary's city limits. It's also about 24 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Downtown Calgary. Indus is located near Highway 791 and Highway 22X.

Indus has a great recreation complex. This complex serves people from Rocky View County and nearby areas of Calgary. It's a place where families, including those who have farmed for generations, come together.

Hockey in Indus

The community of Indus has a strong hockey program. It started in the early 1970s. Many young athletes from Indus have gone on to play at higher levels. Some have played in junior hockey leagues. Others have played for Canadian universities or USA colleges (NCAA). Some even became professional hockey players!

Two famous players from Indus are Michael Stewart and Bart Vanstaalduinen. They both played college hockey for Michigan State University. Michael Stewart was picked by the New York Rangers in the 1992 NHL draft. He later played and coached in Europe. Bart Vanstaalduinen also played in Europe and the (ECHL).

How Indus Got Its Name

The name 'Indus' was first suggested in 1914. Dr. J.M. Fulton gave the name to the Canadian Pacific Railway. He shortened it from the word "industry." When the railway reached this area, Dr. Fulton hoped it would become a place for industrial growth.

Indus Population Facts

In 2021, the population of Indus was 36 people. These people lived in 15 homes. This was a small change from 2016, when 42 people lived there. The hamlet covers about 0.78 square kilometers (0.30 square miles). This means there were about 46 people per square kilometer in 2021.

A local count in 2018 showed 32 people living in Indus. This was a small decrease from 36 people in 2013. In 2016, the population was 62 people in 24 homes. This was an increase from 45 people in 2011.

Learning at Indus School

Indus School first opened its doors in 1952. It teaches students from kindergarten all the way to grade 8. The school is part of the Rocky View School District.

Indus School is the southernmost school in its district. It welcomes students from many places. These include Rocky View County, Langdon, Chestermere, and parts of Calgary. Students from Calgary's southeast communities like Auburn Bay and McKenzie Towne attend.

Modernizing Indus School

Big changes and renovations started at Indus School in 2019. The main construction began in May 2020. By August 2021, most of the project was finished. It was officially completed in the autumn of 2021.

The project added a cool new "maker space." This room can be used for art, woodworking, metalworking, and robotics. The school also got a redesigned learning commons. Its design was inspired by the rural area around the school. Students also got better locker rooms. A shared workspace called "The Living Room" was added. It has garage doors that can open into nearby classrooms.

In 2023, the Rocky View School District made a change. A new high school opened in nearby Langdon. Because of this, Indus School now teaches students from kindergarten to grade 8. Grade 9 is no longer offered there.
