The Inhumans are a special race of superheroes in American comic books from Marvel Comics. They are known for their unique powers. The stories often focus on the Inhuman Royal Family, a group of superpowered characters who lead their people.
The Inhumans first appeared in Fantastic Four #45 in December 1965. However, some members like Medusa and Gorgon showed up earlier. Their secret city, Attilan, was first mentioned way back in 1941. It was described as a home for a very advanced race, even when humans were still in the Stone Age.
Over the years, the Inhuman Royal Family has appeared in many Marvel animated shows and video games. Inhuman characters were also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). They were seen in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and had their own TV series called Inhumans in 2017. They even made it to the big screen in the 2022 movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Who Are the Inhumans?
The Inhumans were created millions of years ago by an alien race called the Kree. The Kree were fighting the Skrulls and found that early humans on Earth had special genes. They experimented on these humans to create a super-powered race. Their goal was to make strong soldiers for their wars. They also hoped to find a way to improve their own race.
These experiments worked, creating humans with amazing abilities. But the Kree stopped their project because a prophecy said these experiments would lead to someone who would destroy the Kree.
The Terrigen Mist
The Inhumans formed their own society, hidden from regular humans. They developed advanced technology. A key part of their culture is the mutagenic Terrigen Mist. This mist comes from Terrigen Crystals and changes Inhuman biology. When Inhumans are exposed to it, they gain various superpowers. This process is called Terrigenesis.
However, the Terrigen Mist can also cause genetic damage or deformities. To avoid this, the Inhumans developed a system. Only those with perfect genes were allowed to go through Terrigenesis. This was supposed to prevent ugly or animal-like mutations. But sometimes, an Inhuman would still become a "throw-back," known as an Alpha Primitive.
Alpha Primitives
The Alpha Primitives are a worker class created by the Inhumans. They first appeared in Fantastic Four #47 in February 1966. Because the Inhumans had a small population, they made these human-like workers. Alpha Primitives were bred to be strong but not very smart. They could only be made by cloning, not by having children.
Sometimes, the Alpha Primitives tried to rebel against their Inhuman rulers. Later, it was revealed that Alpha Primitives are actually humans exposed to a special gas. This gas was created by the Kree as a weapon for the Inhumans to use against their human enemies.
The Royal Family
The Inhumans are led by their king, Black Bolt, and his Royal Family. This family includes:
- Medusa (Black Bolt's wife, with super-strong hair)
- Karnak the Shatterer (can find weaknesses in anything)
- Gorgon (has super-strong legs that create shockwaves)
- Triton (can breathe underwater)
- Crystal (can control elements like fire, water, earth, and air)
- Maximus the Mad (Black Bolt's evil brother, a genius inventor)
- Lockjaw (a giant, teleporting dog)
Both Crystal and Medusa have been members of the Fantastic Four. Crystal has also been a member of the Avengers.
Black Bolt has led the Inhumans through many challenges. These include Maximus trying to take the throne and revolts by the worker class. He also dealt with attacks from humans and the destruction of their city, Attilan.
Life in Attilan
Inhuman society is very strict. After an Inhuman goes through Terrigenesis, they are given a place in society based on their new abilities. No Inhuman, no matter how powerful, can change their assigned role.
The Inhumans' secret existence became known to the public as they started interacting more with Earth's superheroes. They have helped heroes like the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men fight villains like Doctor Doom and Magneto.
Their Amazing Powers
Even without the Terrigen Mist, Inhumans have some advantages. The Kree's changes and centuries of careful breeding have made them special. Their average lifespan is 150 years. A healthy Inhuman has superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. They are much stronger and faster than the best human athletes. For example, Karnak can lift about one ton.
Exposure to the Terrigen Mist can make these powers even stronger. However, it can also sometimes reduce physical abilities. Most Inhumans are used to living in a very clean environment. They often have trouble with Earth's pollution for long periods.
Inhumans in the Comics
The Inhumans first appeared in Fantastic Four #45 in December 1965. They later had their own stories in Thor comics. Their first ongoing series, Amazing Adventures, started in 1970.
In 1975, the Inhumans got their very own comic series, which ran for 12 issues. After being mostly absent in the 1980s, they returned in a graphic novel in 1988.
A popular Inhumans limited series by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee ran from 1998 to 1999. This series won an Eisner Award for Best New Series. It helped make the Inhumans popular comic characters.
Later, major events in the Marvel Universe, like Infinity in 2013, brought big changes. A "Terrigen Bomb" exploded, creating many new Inhumans, called "NuHumans." One famous NuHuman is Kamala Khan, who got her own comic series.
In 2018, a new five-issue series called Death of the Inhumans was launched.
