Future Plans for Interstate 14
Even though I-14 is short now, there are big plans for it! In 2005, people started planning to make it much longer. The idea is for I-14 to stretch across several states. It would start near I-49 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Then, it would go east through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The highway would eventually end in Augusta, Georgia, or North Augusta, South Carolina. This long route is called the Gulf Coast Strategic Highway. It aims to connect important areas, especially military bases, along the Gulf Coast.
Why is it called the 14th Amendment Highway?
Interstate 14 was given its name to honor the 14th Amendment. This is a very important part of the United States Constitution.
What is the 14th Amendment?
The 14th Amendment was added to the Constitution in 1868. It was created after the American Civil War. This amendment has several key parts:
- Citizenship: It says that everyone born or naturalized in the U.S. is a citizen. This includes former enslaved people.
- Equal Protection: It also says that states must give all people equal protection under the law. This means laws should apply fairly to everyone.
- Due Process: It protects people's rights to fair treatment by the government.
Naming the highway after this amendment helps remind people of its importance. It stands for fairness and equal rights for all citizens.
