A Look Back at Irondale's Past

Irondale was officially started in 1857 by a man named John G. Scott. He built an iron furnace there, which is a big oven used to make iron. This is how the town got its name, "Irondale," meaning "iron valley."

For a short time in 1906, the town's name was changed to Savoy. This was done to stop mail from getting mixed up with two other nearby towns, Ironton and Iron Mountain. But after just a few years, the name was changed back to Irondale.

Boy Scout Camp Irondale

Irondale was once home to a special Boy Scout camp called Irondale Scout Reservation. It first opened in 1920. This camp was a place where Boy Scouts could learn new skills and enjoy the outdoors. However, it closed down in August 1965. A new camp, the S-F Scout Ranch, took its place.
