Irssi is a special computer program. It helps you chat with friends and groups online using something called Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Think of IRC as an old-school chat room system. Irssi works on many different computer systems like Linux, FreeBSD, macOS, and even Microsoft Windows.
A person named Timo Sirainen first created Irssi in January 1999. It's free to use because it's released under the GNU GPL. This means people can use, share, and change the program.
Irssi has a text-based user interface. This means you use your keyboard to type commands instead of clicking buttons with a mouse. You can make Irssi work just how you like it. You can change its settings or add special tools called plugins and Perl scripts.

What Irssi Can Do
Irssi was built from scratch using the C programming language. This means the creators started fresh, without using old code from other programs. This helped them make sure Irssi was safe and easy to change.
Customizing Your Chat Experience
You can make Irssi look and work differently by adding Perl scripts. These are like small programs that add new features. For example, some scripts might change how messages look.
You can also add plugins. These are bigger tools that can add new ways to chat. Some plugins even let you use Irssi to connect to other chat services like ICQ or XMPP.
Changing Settings
You can change Irssi's settings in two ways. You can use commands right in the program. Or, you can edit special configuration files. These files store all your choices for how Irssi works.
Where Irssi Works
Irssi was first made for computer systems similar to Unix. These include many versions of Linux and other systems like FreeBSD and OpenBSD. You can easily get Irssi for these systems.
Irssi on Windows and Mac
Even though it started on Unix-like systems, Irssi also works on Microsoft Windows. You can run it using a tool called Cygwin. In 2006, a special version of Irssi was made just for Windows.
For macOS computers, you can get Irssi through special tools called package managers. These include Homebrew, MacPorts, and Fink. There were even some chat programs for Mac, like IrssiX and MacIrssi, that were based on Irssi.
