Irwin is a small city located in Shelby County, Iowa, in the United States. It sits right next to the West Nishnabotna River. In 2020, about 319 people lived there.

History of Irwin

Irwin was started in 1881 by a group called the Western Town Lot Company. The city got its name from E. W. Irwin, who owned the land. Irwin officially became a city in 1892.

In 1963, something serious happened near Irwin. Two large bomber planes from the United States Air Force crashed after colliding in the air. This happened on August 19. The planes were B-47E models. All six crew members managed to eject from the planes, but sadly, three of them did not survive.

Irwin is located in western Iowa. The city covers a total area of about 0.60 square miles (1.52 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the city limits.

Before this district was formed, Irwin had its own school district. However, on July 1, 1992, the Irwin Community School District joined with another district to become the IKM Community School District. Then, on July 1, 2011, the IKM district merged again to form the current IKM–Manning Community School District.
