A Look at Isesaki's History
Isesaki grew up around Akaishi Castle during the Sengoku period (a time of many wars in Japan). This castle was a strong base for the Yura clan. Later, during the Edo period, Isesaki became the center of the Isesaki Domain. This was a feudal area ruled by the Sakai clan under the Tokugawa shogunate.
The area also had two "post towns" called shukuba. These towns were on the Nikkō Reiheishi Kaidō road. This road connected the Nakasendō directly to Nikkō, avoiding Edo (which is now Tokyo).
Isesaki Town was officially created on April 1, 1889. This happened after the Meiji Restoration, when Japan started its modern system of towns and cities. On September 13, 1940, Isesaki Town combined with two villages, Uehasu and Moro, to become the city of Isesaki. Over the years, more villages joined the city.
On January 1, 2005, the towns of Akabori and Sakai, and the village of Azuma became part of Isesaki. On April 1, 2007, Isesaki was named a "special city" (tokureishi). This gave it more power to manage its own affairs.
Isesaki's Economy and Industries
For a long time, Isesaki was known for making silk. A special cloth called "Isesaki Meisen" was very famous. People have been making this cloth since the late 1600s. It became very popular during the Meiji era and Taishō period. However, because Western-style clothes are now common, its popularity is not as high.
Today, Isesaki is home to companies that make car parts and electrical equipment. Sanden Corporation, which makes car air conditioning and other equipment, has its main office here. Meisei Electric also makes communication and electronic devices. Large industrial areas have been built in the suburbs. This makes Isesaki one of the most important industrial cities in the northern Kantō region.
Isesaki is also where J-List is located. This company sells anime goods, video games, and other Japanese products.
