Early Life and Career
Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah was born in Kuala Terengganu. He was the fifth son of Sultan Zainal Abidin III, who ruled Terengganu from 1881 to 1918. His mother was Cik Maimuna binti Abdullah.
He went to school at the Kuala Terengganu Malay School and later at the Malay College. In 1929, he started working in the Terengganu government. He held various important roles.
For example, in 1934, he became an Assistant Collector of Land Revenue. In 1935, he worked as an aide to his older half-brother, Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah. He even went with Sultan Sulaiman to the coronation of King George VI in 1937.
Later, he became a Registrar for the High Court and the Court of Appeal. He also served as a minister in the Terengganu state cabinet. In 1941, he was promoted to Terengganu State Secretary.
Becoming Sultan of Terengganu
Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah passed away in 1942. His son, Sultan Ali Shah, was then recognized as the new Sultan by the Japanese, who were in charge of Malaya at the time. The Thai government also recognized Sultan Ali when they took over the administration of Terengganu in 1943.
However, when the British returned after World War II, they decided not to recognize Sultan Ali Shah. The British Military Administration wanted to remove him.
On 5 November 1945, the Terengganu State Council decided to remove Sultan Ali. They then appointed Tengku Ismail as the new Sultan of Terengganu. He became known as Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah. He was officially installed as Sultan on 6 June 1949. His family has continued to rule Terengganu ever since.
Serving Malaysia as Yang di-Pertuan Agong
Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah was chosen to be the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia. He served in this important role from 21 September 1965 to 20 September 1970.
During his time as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia became more active on the world stage. Many important leaders from around the world visited Malaysia. These included US President Lyndon B. Johnson, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, and Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia.
The country also became more secure during his reign. A conflict with Indonesia, called the Konfrontasi, came to an end. The Philippines also started to have normal relations with Malaysia again.
In 1969, Sultan Ismail wanted to step down due to health reasons. However, the Prime Minister at the time, Tunku Abdul Rahman, convinced him to stay. Sultan Ismail's reign was described as "a most eventful and glorious one."
He launched the Rukun Negara, which is Malaysia's national philosophy, on 31 August 1970. This philosophy guides Malaysians to live together peacefully and with understanding.
Family Life
Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah was married four times and had several children. One of his sons, Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, later became the Sultan of Terengganu after him.
