Izabela Walentyna Jaruga-Nowacka (born August 23, 1950 – died April 10, 2010) was an important Polish politician. She served in Poland's national Parliament, called the Sejm, for many years. From May 2004 to October 2005, she held a very important job as Deputy Prime Minister under Prime Minister Marek Belka. During this time, she was also the Minister for Social Policy.

Early Life and Education
Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka was born in Gdańsk, a city by the Baltic Sea in Poland. She studied ethnography at the University of Warsaw. Ethnography is the study of different cultures and people.
After finishing her studies, she worked at research institutes. From 1974 to 1976, she was at the Institute for Science Policy and Higher Education. Then, from 1976 to 1986, she worked at the Institute of Socialist Nations.
Political Career and Public Service
Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka became active in politics in the mid-1980s. She joined the League of Polish Women. In 1991, she became involved with the Democratic-Popular Movement.
Serving in the Sejm
In 1993, she was elected to the Sejm, which is like Poland's House of Representatives. She was a member of the Labor Union party. She was a strong supporter of women's rights.

- Sejm 2005–2007
She was elected for a fourth time in October 2007, representing the new Left and Democrats party.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
In May 2004, Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka became the Deputy Prime Minister of Poland. This is a very high position in the government. She also served as the Minister for Social Policy from November 2004 to October 2005. In this role, she focused on issues important to people's well-being and social support.
Family Life
Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka was married to Jerzy Nowacki, a mathematician. He was the rector (head) of the Polish-Japanese Institute of Information Technology in Warsaw. They had two daughters, Barbara and Katarzyna.
Legacy and Passing
Izabela Jaruga-Nowacka tragically passed away on April 10, 2010. She was on a flight carrying the President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, which crashed near Smolensk, Russia. Everyone on board the plane died in the accident.
After her passing, on April 16, 2010, she was honored with a special award. She received the Commander's Cross with Star of the Polonia Restituta. This is a very high honor in Poland, given for outstanding service to the country.
