Jón Daði Böðvarsson (born on May 25, 1992) is a professional footballer from Iceland. He plays as a striker for Selfoss, a team in the Icelandic second tier. Jón Daði comes from a family of writers; his grandparents were two famous Icelandic authors, Þorsteinn frá Hamri and Ásta Sigurðardóttir.
Jón Daði's Club Journey
Starting at Selfoss
Jón Daði began his senior football career in 2009 with his hometown club, Selfoss. He helped his team get promoted to Iceland's top league, the Úrvalsdeild, by scoring 20 goals. In 2011, he spent four months on loan with a youth team in Denmark, Aarhus. After returning to Selfoss, he helped them get promoted back to the top league again.
Playing for Viking
In November 2012, Jón Daði moved to Norway to play for Viking. He spent three seasons with the team, scoring 15 goals in the Norwegian top league.
Time at Kaiserslautern
In January 2016, Jón Daði joined 1. FC Kaiserslautern, a German second-division team. He had already agreed to this move in June 2015. He played his first game for Kaiserslautern on February 5, 2016. He scored his first goal for the team on March 4, 2016.
Joining Wolverhampton Wanderers
On August 2, 2016, Jón Daði signed a three-year contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers, an English team in the EFL Championship. He scored his first goal for the club in his very first game on August 6, 2016. This also made him the 1,000th player to play a league game for the club! He scored two more goals for Wolves before moving on in April 2017.
Moving to Reading
Even though he was a popular player at Wolves, Jón Daði joined another English Championship team, Reading, on July 14, 2017. He signed a three-year deal. He scored his first goal for Reading in August 2017. In January 2018, he scored his first hat-trick (three goals in one game) for Reading during an FA Cup match.
Playing for Millwall
On July 12, 2019, Jón Daði moved to Millwall, another Championship club. He scored his first two goals for Millwall in an EFL Cup game in August 2019.
Time at Bolton Wanderers
In January 2022, Jón Daði joined Bolton Wanderers, a team in EFL League One. He signed an eighteen-month contract. In April 2023, Bolton won the 2023 EFL Trophy Final. Even though Jón Daði was injured and couldn't play in the final, he received a medal because he had played in earlier matches of the tournament. In December 2023, he scored another hat-trick in an FA Cup game against Harrogate Town. He left Bolton Wanderers in June 2024.
Short Spell at Wrexham
On October 25, 2024, Jón Daði signed a short-term deal with Wrexham.
Joining Burton Albion
Jón Daði moved to Burton Albion, another League One club, on January 16, 2025. He scored a goal in his very first game for Burton Albion on January 21, 2025. In May 2025, he decided to return to Iceland with his family after almost 10 years playing in England.
Returning Home to Selfoss
On July 1, 2025, Jón Daði Böðvarsson officially returned to his first club, Selfoss, in his hometown.
Jón Daði's International Career
Jón Daði played for Iceland's national teams at different age levels, including the under-19 and under-21 teams. He made his first appearance for the senior Iceland squad on November 14, 2012, in a friendly game.
He scored his first goal for Iceland on September 9, 2014, during a qualifying match for the UEFA Euro 2016.
Playing in UEFA Euro 2016
Jón Daði was chosen to be part of Iceland's team for the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. This was a very special moment because it was the first time Iceland had ever qualified for such a big international football tournament! Jón Daði played in all five of Iceland's matches in France. He even scored a goal in the final group game against Austria, which helped Iceland move forward in the competition.
On June 27, 2016, Jón Daði played in the exciting game against England in the Euro 2016 round of 16. Iceland surprised everyone by winning 2-1 and moving on to the quarter-finals!
2018 FIFA World Cup
Jón Daði was also selected for Iceland's 23-player squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on May 11, 2018.
