Jack S. Hill (born July 15, 1944 – died April 6, 2020) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. Jack Hill represented the 4th District of Georgia in the Georgia State Senate. When he passed away, he was the longest-serving State Senator in Georgia's history.
About Jack Hill
Jack Hill was born in Reidsville, Georgia. He used to own a grocery store. His wife, Ruth Ann, was an elementary school principal. They had three children and seven grandchildren together.
Jack Hill went to Reidsville High School. He also studied at Georgia Southern University. He served in the Georgia Air National Guard for 33 years. He was a unit commander and also the State Inspector General. Jack Hill died on April 6, 2020. His wife, Ruth Ann Nail Hill, passed away shortly after him on April 24, 2020.
Jack Hill's Political Work
Jack Hill was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1990. He was re-elected many times, serving 15 two-year terms. This shows how much people trusted him.
Senator Hill was the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. This committee helps decide how the state's money is spent. Under his leadership, Georgia kept a "Triple A" bond rating. This is the highest rating a state can get. It means Georgia was very good at managing its money.
Senator Hill also helped lead the Senate Rules Committee as its Vice Chairman. He was part of other important committees too. These included Natural Resources and the Environment, and Regulated Industries and Utilities. He also helped the Finance Committee. In the past, he led committees for K-12 Education, Ethics, and Higher Education.
Senator Hill represented Georgia's 4th Senatorial District. This area included several counties. These were Bulloch, Candler, Effingham, part of Emanuel, Evans, and part of Tattnall counties.
Remembering Jack Hill
After Jack Hill's death, Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park was renamed Jack Hill State Park. This was done to honor him. In 2021, Georgia Southern University announced plans for a new building. This building will be a convocation center, replacing Hanner Fieldhouse. It will be named after both Jack and Ruth Ann Hill. The new center is expected to open in the fall of 2023.
