John Carl Scarbath (born August 12, 1930 – died December 6, 2020) was a talented American football quarterback. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for teams like the Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers. Jack Scarbath was so good that he was later added to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

Growing Up and Starting Football

Jack Scarbath was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on August 12, 1930. He went to high school at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. There, he played both football as a quarterback and basketball as a guard. His skills caught the eye of Harry C. Byrd, who was the president of the University of Maryland. Byrd offered Jack a full scholarship to play sports at the university.

Becoming a College Football Star

When Jack Scarbath started at the University of Maryland, he even helped build the school's Byrd Stadium by pouring cement! He also worked at a factory that made metal parts, which helped him stay strong for football.

With Jack as their quarterback, the Maryland Terrapins football team had an amazing record of 24 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. They even won against Tennessee in the 1951 Sugar Bowl. In 1952, Jack was chosen by everyone for the 1952 College Football All-America Team. He also came in second place for the famous Heisman Trophy. Jack was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year. He was also the South's Most Valuable Player in the North–South Shrine Game. Besides football, he played lacrosse for Maryland in 1952. Jack graduated from Maryland in 1954 with a degree in industrial engineering.

Playing in the NFL

The Washington Redskins picked Jack Scarbath in the first round of the 1953 NFL Draft. He was the third player chosen overall! He played for Washington in 1953 and 1954. In 1955, Jack played in the Canadian Football League for the Ottawa Rough Riders. He then returned to the NFL to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1956. This was his last season in the NFL. After his playing career, Jack became an assistant coach for the University of South Carolina for five years.

Life After Football and Special Honors

After his football career, Jack Scarbath started his own business. It was called John C. Scarbath and Sons, which sold special grinding materials. He sold his company in 1995. Then, he worked with the Maryland Education Foundation. This group helps provide college scholarships for students who are good at both academics and sports.

Jack Scarbath received many honors for his amazing career. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. The University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame also welcomed him in 1984. Jack Scarbath passed away on December 6, 2020, at the age of 90.
