Jackson is a city in Butts County, Georgia, United States. It is the main city, also called the county seat, of Butts County. In 2020, about 5,557 people lived there. The city is named after a former governor, James Jackson.

History of Jackson, Georgia

Jackson was started in 1826. It began as a piece of land about 303 acres (1.2 km²) big, bought specifically to build a town. This land was divided into smaller squares, and then into lots for people to buy. The very first person to buy a lot in the new town was John D. Swift.

During the American Civil War, a large part of Jackson was destroyed. This happened when General William T. Sherman and his army marched through Georgia. After the war, Jackson, like many places in the South, faced tough economic times for many years.

Jackson stayed a small village until railroads arrived in the late 1800s. On May 5, 1882, the first train came to Jackson. This was a big moment, making it easier to transport people and goods.

In the 1900s, Jackson grew. Factories that made textiles (like cloth) became the biggest employers. When Interstate 75 was built nearby, it made it quick for people to travel to bigger cities like Atlanta and Macon. All the schools in the county joined together into one system located in Jackson. Schools also became desegregated in 1968, meaning students of all races could attend together. By the 1970s, Jackson became a "bedroom community." This means many people lived in Jackson but traveled to other cities for work. City taxes were also removed in the 1970s.
