History of Jackson, Nebraska
Before Jackson was established, a town called Old St. John's was settled nearby. This happened on June 2, 1856. A group of sixty Irish immigrants, led by a priest named Father Trecy, started this Catholic community. It was one of the first towns in Dakota County. It was also the very first Catholic church community in Nebraska.
Around 1860, the Missouri River started to flood and threaten Old St. John's. Because of this, everyone living there moved south. They settled in the place we now know as Jackson.
Jackson was first called Franklin. This name was given around 1860 when the town was planned. However, people soon found out that another town in Nebraska already had a post office named Franklin. To avoid confusion, the community changed its name. They decided to honor Andrew Jackson, a famous American president, by naming the village Jackson.
