Early Life and Music Beginnings
Jahlil Beats was born in Chester, Pennsylvania. When he was 12, he started learning about making music. His father, who was in a band, and his cousin helped him. This is when his love for music began.
By age 15, he taught his brother, Anthony Tucker, also known as The Beat Bully, how to produce music. They started making beats together. In high school, they would share their beats with friends who wanted to rap. Jahlil later went to college but had to leave when he lost his financial help.
Musical Career Highlights
After leaving college in 2008, Jahlil Beats went back to his hometown. There, he met a rising rapper named Meek Mill. They quickly started working together often. Jahlil says this is when he began to take music seriously.
He first became well-known after producing several songs for Tyga and Chris Brown's mixtape Fan of a Fan. One of these songs was "Holla at Me". He then got what he calls his first big song placement, "Tonight," on Fabolous' EP There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music EP.
In 2011, Jahlil Beats produced Meek Mill's very popular song "Ima Boss". The music he created for this song was even named one of the top instrumentals by Complex magazine. Later that year, he signed a publishing deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation. This company also manages Meek Mill.
After signing with Roc Nation, he worked on songs for many other artists. These included Jay-Z, Rihanna, J. Cole, and Big Sean. He also started working closely with producer No ID. Jahlil Beats even helped confirm that he was working on Jay-Z's album, Magna Carta... Holy Grail. In July 2012, he released a free collection of six songs called Legend Music.
He released several instrumental mixtapes (collections of beats). These included Legends Era in 2012, Legends Era II in 2013, and Legends Era III later that year. These mixtapes featured many guest artists. In October 2014, he released another mixtape called ... Music 7.
Production Style
Jahlil Beats used to use "samples" in his music. A sample is a small part of an existing song. But now, he prefers to create most of his music from scratch. He explained that he wants to keep all the money he earns from his music. If you use a sample, you might have to share a large part of your earnings with the original artist.
In many of his songs, you can hear a siren sound in the background. His songs also have a special sound tag. It's his niece, who was three years old at the time, saying "Jahlil Beats Holla At Me."
