Jamal Robertson (born January 10, 1977) is a former professional football player. He played as a running back and kick returner. Jamal played both American football and Canadian football.

He played college football at Ohio Northern University. Later, he played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). His career lasted from 2001 to 2011.

Jamal Robertson grew up in Dayton, Ohio. In college, he was named a Division III All-American twice. He started his pro career in 2001 with the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL. He then spent five seasons in the NFL, mostly as a kick returner.

In 2002, he joined the San Francisco 49ers. Before playing for them, he played for the NFL Europe team Rhein Fire. From 2004 to 2005, Jamal played for the Carolina Panthers. He helped the 2005 Panthers team reach the NFC Championship game.

After a short time with the Atlanta Falcons in 2006, Jamal returned to the CFL. He played for the Toronto Argonauts from 2008 to 2009. Then he joined the BC Lions from 2010 to 2011. In his last season, he helped the 2011 BC Lions win the 99th Grey Cup.

Early Life and High School Football

Jamal Robertson was born in Washington, D. C.. He spent his childhood in Dayton, Ohio. In 1997, he graduated from Stebbins High School. This school is in Riverside, a town near Dayton.

In his senior year of high school, 1996, Jamal was an amazing runner. He rushed for 2,029 yards. This showed his great talent in football early on.

College Football Career

Jamal Robertson went to Ohio Northern University. He played for their Ohio Northern Polar Bears football team. This team is part of NCAA Division III. He played as a running back and kick returner from 1997 to 2000.

In his senior year, 2000, Jamal was a top player. He led all of Division III football in all-purpose yards. He set a school record with 2,308 all-purpose yards. He also set a rushing record with 1,664 yards.

During 1999 and 2000, he received many honors. He was named first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference. He also earned first-team Hewlett-Packard Division III All-American honors. When he finished college, Jamal was Ohio Northern's all-time leader. He held records for rushing yards (4,169), all-purpose yards (5,388), and touchdowns (56).

Professional Football Journey

Starting in the CFL and NFL Europe (2001–2002)

Jamal Robertson was not chosen in the 2001 NFL draft. However, he still got a chance to play pro football. He signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He spent the 2001 season learning and training on their practice squad.

On January 23, 2002, Jamal signed with the NFL team San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers sent him to the Rhein Fire in NFL Europa. This was on February 6. Jamal had a fantastic season with the Rhein Fire. He scored eight touchdowns. One of them was a record-breaking 90-yard touchdown run. He was named the NFL Europe's offensive MVP. His team also made it to the World Bowl X championship game.

Playing for the San Francisco 49ers (2002–2004)

Jamal started his NFL career in 2002. He was inactive for the first five weeks. Then he played in six games for the 49ers. He mostly played on special teams. He returned 11 kickoffs for 242 yards. His longest return was 42 yards. He also made one tackle on special teams. A hamstring injury ended his season early on December 30.

In 2003, Jamal played in nine games. He ran the ball 32 times for 136 yards. He also made three tackles on special teams.

During the 2004 season, Jamal played in seven games for the 49ers. He returned 25 kicks for 560 yards. He also carried the ball 16 times for 71 yards. He scored his first NFL touchdown on September 19. It was a one-yard run against the New Orleans Saints. The 49ers later released Jamal on November 2.

Time with the Carolina Panthers (2004–2005)

On November 13, 2004, the Carolina Panthers signed Jamal Robertson. He played in five games for them. He returned six kickoffs for 180 yards. He also made one tackle on special teams.

In 2005, Jamal played more often as a running back. This was because other players were injured. He played in seven regular season games. He rushed for 41 yards and scored a touchdown. He also returned 16 kickoffs for 343 yards. Jamal played in all three of the Panthers' playoff games. This included the NFC Championship. He had 19 rushing yards, 27 receiving yards, and 186 kick return yards in the playoffs. The Panthers released Jamal on September 2, 2006.

Brief Stint with the Atlanta Falcons (2006)

On December 12, 2006, the Atlanta Falcons signed Jamal. They needed him because their running backs were injured. Jamal played in one game for the Falcons. He was released by the team on August 8, 2007.

Later CFL Career (2007–2011)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Jamal on November 14, 2007. This was due to injuries to their running backs.

On June 5, 2008, Jamal was traded to the Toronto Argonauts. He started seven of 17 games in 2008. He rushed for 548 yards and six touchdowns. He also caught passes for 258 yards and one touchdown. He returned kickoffs for 333 yards.

In 2009, Jamal played in all 18 games. He rushed for 1,031 yards and nine touchdowns. He also had 482 receiving yards and 191 kickoff return yards.

On March 22, 2010, Jamal signed with the BC Lions. He started all 16 games he played. He rushed for 953 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 387 receiving yards and one touchdown.

He re-signed with the BC Lions on January 24, 2011. In this season, the Lions won the 99th Grey Cup. Jamal started seven of nine games. He had 296 rushing yards with three touchdowns. He also had 170 receiving yards with one touchdown. He returned kickoffs for 69 yards. On December 1, 2011, Jamal Robertson announced his retirement from football.
