James Barnett was an American politician who lived from 1810 to 1874. He was born in Orange County, Vermont and later became an important figure in New York politics. He served in different government roles, including a state senator and assembly member.
Early Life and Family
James Barnett was born on May 18, 1810, in Orange County, Vermont. When he was about seven years old, his family moved to Madison County, New York. He grew up working on his father's farm and went to local schools.
In 1832, James started working as a clerk for a merchant. By 1836, he opened his own business in Fayetteville, which is in Onondaga County.
James Barnett was married twice. On March 23, 1836, he married Julia Ann Rich. They had five children together. After Julia Ann passed away in 1848, James married Ellen King on December 25, 1848. They had two daughters. In 1838, he moved to Peterboro.
Political Journey
James Barnett was very involved in politics throughout his life. He started his political journey as a member of the Democratic Party. This party is one of the oldest and largest political parties in the United States.
Later, he became friends with Gerrit Smith, who was a well-known activist. James then joined the Liberty Party. This party was mainly focused on ending slavery in the United States.
When the Republican Party was formed, James Barnett joined it. The Republican Party was also created with strong anti-slavery views, among other goals.

James Barnett held several important positions in New York State government:
