Smithfield is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. Its main offices are in the small community of Peterboro. Both the town and Peterboro are named after Peter Smith, an early landowner in the area. In 2010, the town had a population of 1,288 people. The Town of Smithfield is located in the central part of Madison County.

The History of Smithfield
People first settled in this area around 1797. The town of Smithfield was officially created in 1807. It was formed from land that used to be part of the Town of Cazenovia.
The 2014 Tornado
On July 8, 2014, at 7:02 p.m., a strong tornado hit Smithfield. This tornado was an EF2 tornado. Its winds were estimated to be about 135 miles per hour (217 km/h). Sadly, the tornado caused the deaths of four people. It also destroyed many homes. One house was picked up and carried about 150 yards (137 meters) before being thrown into another home. Another three-story house was pushed off its foundation and rolled down a hill. The person inside that house also died.

Most of the people in Smithfield were White (96.68%). A smaller number were African American (1.00%), Native American (0.83%), or Asian (0.25%). About 1.24% of the people were from two or more races. People who identified as Hispanic or Latino made up 0.25% of the population.
Out of the 415 households, 42.4% had children under 18 living with them. About 59.8% were married couples living together. Some households (8.9%) had a female head of household with no husband present. About 23.9% of households were not families. The average household had 2.90 people, and the average family had 3.25 people.
The population in Smithfield was spread out by age. About 31.2% of the people were under 18 years old. About 7.5% were between 18 and 24. The largest group, 30.5%, was between 25 and 44 years old. About 22.9% were between 45 and 64, and 7.9% were 65 years or older. The average age in the town was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were about 103.2 males.

Smithfield has several smaller communities and specific locations within its borders:
- Bliss Corners – This is a location found south of Peterboro.
- Eisaman Corners – You can find this location in the northern part of the town.
- Embury Corners – This location is in the southeastern corner of the town.
- Peterboro – This is a small community, or hamlet, located in the center of Smithfield. It is home to the Gerrit Smith Estate and the Peter Smith Land Office.
- Siloam – This is another hamlet located northeast of Peterboro.
