James Creighton Odiorne (June 4, 1802 – February 5, 1879) was an American businessman and writer. He was known for his interest in history and science. Odiorne also played a role in important social movements of his time.

Early Life and Education

James Creighton Odiorne was born in London, England, on June 4, 1802. His father, George Odiorne, was a merchant from Boston, Massachusetts. While in England for business, George married Maria Creighton. She was the daughter of Rev. James Creighton, who was a close friend of John Wesley.

The Odiorne family moved to America in the summer of 1802. James prepared for college at Phillips Academy in Andover. He then attended Yale College, graduating in 1826.

Business and Family Life

On June 25, 1828, James married Susan Elizabeth Warren. She was the oldest daughter of Isaac Warren from Framingham, Massachusetts. In the same year, James joined his father's business. They worked together in the iron and nail trade in Boston.

However, James retired from the business in 1837. In 1857, he moved to Framingham, Massachusetts. He continued to spend parts of his winters in Boston. His first wife, Susan, passed away in Boston on January 9, 1851. James married again on June 8, 1870, to Frances M. Meacham. She was the youngest daughter of George Meacham from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Public Service and Writings

After leaving his business, James Odiorne focused on his love for history and science. He also studied law. He became very interested in important social issues.

In 1830, Odiorne became involved in the movement against the Free Masons. He wrote a 300-page book called Opinions on Speculative Masonry. Two years later, in 1832, he helped start the New England Anti-Slavery Society. This group worked to end slavery. Odiorne served as the treasurer for this society for many years.

He was also an active member of other important groups. These included the American Statistical Association and the Boston Society of Natural History. In 1875, he published another book. It was called Genealogy of the Odiorne Family and was 222 pages long.

Later Years

James Creighton Odiorne had four sons and two daughters with his first wife. Three of his sons and one daughter were still living when he passed away.

Odiorne died suddenly on February 5, 1879. He was in Wellesley, Massachusetts, traveling by train from Framingham to Boston.
