James Clough Gist III (born October 26, 1986) is an American former professional basketball player. He is 6 feet 9 inches tall. James played as a power forward and sometimes as a center. He was born in Adana, Turkey.
James Gist played high school basketball at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Then he went on to play college basketball for the Terrapins at the University of Maryland from 2004 to 2008. Gist was known as one of the best forward-centers in Europe. People admired his strong defense and amazing dunks and alley-oops. He was a very athletic player.

High School Basketball
James Gist attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. In his final year, he was a star player. He scored about 19.5 points in each game. He also grabbed 10.3 rebounds and blocked 3.5 shots per game. James became his school's all-time leader in blocked shots. He had over 300 blocks during his high school career.
College Basketball Career
Gist played college basketball for the Maryland Terrapins. He played at the University of Maryland. His best game was against Wake Forest, where he scored 31 points.
Over four seasons in college, Gist played in 130 games for Maryland. He averaged 10.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game. When he graduated, he was fourth in Maryland's history for blocked shots with 231. He was also tenth in rebounds with 783. He scored 1,414 points, which was seventeenth all-time for the team.
Professional Basketball Journey
James Gist was chosen 57th overall in the 2008 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. After playing for an Italian team called Biella for a year, Gist joined the Russian team Lokomotiv-Kuban for the 2009–10 season. He played for the Spurs in the 2010 NBA Summer League.
After that, he played for Partizan Belgrade during the 2010–11 season. With Partizan, he won several championships. These included the Basketball League of Serbia championship, the Radivoj Korać Cup, and the Adriatic League championship. In 2011, he signed with the Turkish team Fenerbahçe Ülker.
On August 15, 2012, Gist signed a one-year deal with the Spanish team Unicaja Málaga. In September, he won the slam dunk contest in the Spanish League. Gist then joined the famous Greek team Panathinaikos in December 2012. He stayed with Panathinaikos for many seasons.
On March 17, 2015, Panathinaikos extended his contract, keeping him until 2017. He continued to be a key player for the team. On October 22, 2015, Gist scored a personal best of 27 points in a EuroLeague game against Karşıyaka.
On July 5, 2017, Gist signed another two-year contract with Panathinaikos. He played for the team until 2019.
On July 8, 2019, Gist signed a two-year contract with the Serbian team Crvena zvezda. He averaged 7.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game there.
Later, on December 3, 2020, he joined Bayern Munich in Germany. On September 25, 2021, he signed with ASVEL in France. His contract was extended until the end of that season.
On November 4, 2022, he signed with Bahçeşehir Koleji in Turkey. He also played in Uruguay for Peñarol. His final team was Prawira Bandung in Indonesia in 2024. After his playing career, he became a trainer at the Pro-Fit Basketball Training camp.

James Gist is the son of Linda and James C. Gist Jr. He was born in İncirlik, Adana, Turkey. This was on October 26, 1986. His father was in the US Air Force and was stationed at İncirlik Air Base at the time. James Gist was the first American child born at İncirlik Air Base.
