James McCleery (born December 2, 1837 – died November 5, 1871) was an American soldier and politician. He was born in Ohio and became a lawyer. During the American Civil War, he was an officer in the Union Army. Later, he served as a U.S. Representative for Louisiana.

Early Life and Education
James McCleery was born in Mecca, Ohio, on December 2, 1837. He attended Oberlin College in Ohio during 1859 and 1860.
Military Service
McCleery joined the Union Army when the American Civil War began. In 1861, he became a second lieutenant in the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. This injury caused him to lose his right arm.
He continued to serve and was promoted to major in 1865. In 1866, he joined the Regular Army as a captain in the 45th U.S. Infantry. He also received special honorary promotions (called brevets) to major and then to brigadier general of Volunteers. He retired from the army on December 15, 1870.
Life After the War
After leaving the army, McCleery moved to St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. He bought a large farm there and started working as a lawyer. He also worked with the Freedmen's Bureau in Louisiana and North Carolina. This organization helped formerly enslaved people after the Civil War.
Later, he moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. There, he became the superintendent of public education for his area. This meant he was in charge of schools.
Political Career
McCleery was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Republican. He represented Louisiana's 4th congressional district. He started his term on March 4, 1871.
Death
James McCleery died on November 5, 1871, while visiting New York City. He was buried in the Christian Church Cemetery in Cortland, Ohio.
