James Myers was an American politician. He served as the second lieutenant governor of Ohio from 1854 to 1856. A lieutenant governor is like a vice president for a state. They help the governor and can take over if the governor cannot do their job.

About James Myers

Early Life and Military Service

James Myers was born in June 1795 in Dutchess County, New York. His family had German roots. When he was young, his parents moved to Albany and then to Schenectady. This is where he grew up.

During the War of 1812, James Myers volunteered to serve in the military. In the summer of 1813, he joined the army. He served in a winter campaign on the northern border under General Wade Hampton. The next summer, he was stationed near New York City at Brooklyn Heights.

Moving to Ohio and Business Ventures

After the war ended, Myers worked as a farmer. He also got involved in business. Around 1823 or 1825, he became a collector of tolls. This job was on the new Erie Canal in Schenectady. He worked there until 1836. That year, he moved to Toledo, Ohio.

In Toledo, Myers helped with building the Miami and Erie Canal. This was an important waterway. After the canal was finished, he focused on managing properties. He also worked in real estate. This means he bought, sold, and managed land and buildings.

Political Career

Serving in the State Senate

James Myers was elected to the Ohio State Senate for two terms. This was under Ohio's first constitution. He represented a large area of Northwest Ohio. His first term began in 1848.

Lieutenant Governor of Ohio

Under Ohio's new constitution, he served one term as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Later Years and Civil War Service

In the mid-1850s, James Myers' health started to become weak. However, he still served a two-year term. He was a representative from Lucas County in the Ohio House of Representatives. This was during the American Civil War. He was chosen for this role by the Union convention.

Final Years

Myers' health continued to get worse. After a lot of pain, he passed away on July 19, 1864. He died at his home in Toledo, Ohio.
